Who was Matthias Corvinus?
His original name was Mátyás Hunyadi. He was born on February 24, 1443, in Transylvania.
He died on April 6, 1490, in Vienna. Matthias Corvinus was king of Hungary in the years 1458
– 1490. He tried to reconstruct the Hungarian state after the years of feudal anarchy. He had
a nickname – Corvinus. It is from the Latin word corvus which means a raven that was on his
escutcheon.
