John Zápolya was the Voivode of Transylvania and the most powerful
nobleman in the Kingdom of Hungary. He was the only one who protected
the Kingdom of Hungary after the Battle of Mohács. He had a right to
claim the throne according to the law that stated that the king of Hungary
had to be from Hungary. So, he was crowned in November 1526.
